A Fresh Take on the Brick-Breaking Idea

Popnoid is a brick-breaking game inspired by Popcorn and Arkanoid. It takes the familiar idea of bouncing a ball into a field of blocks and adds extra effects, bonuses, unusual bricks, and other surprises. The game originally appears as a 2016 JS13KGames entry.

The basic goal remains easy to understand. Keep the ball moving across the play area and use it to clear the blocks above your paddle.

Move the Paddle With the Mouse

You control the paddle with the mouse. The position where the ball touches the paddle changes the direction of its next bounce. This gives you some control over where the ball travels instead of leaving every rebound to chance. Clicking starts the action and also works with features such as the gun when that ability becomes available.

Careful paddle movement matters because hitting the ball near a different part of the paddle can send it toward another section of the brick layout.

Catch Bonuses and Change the Round

Popnoid includes bonus items that fall toward the bottom of the screen. Catching them can change what happens during the current round. The game code includes effects such as extra balls and a gun that fires lasers from the paddle. It also contains special brick types, including bomb bricks and bricks that can create another ball.

These additions make the board less predictable than a plain brick-breaking game.

Clear the Remaining Bricks

Popnoid rewards both quick reactions and good paddle placement. A ball can move quickly once it starts bouncing between blocks, so watching its path becomes important.

The rules stay familiar enough for new players. Move the paddle, keep the ball in play, break the required blocks, catch useful bonuses, and use the changing ball angles to reach difficult parts of the board. The extra bricks and power-ups give Popnoid its own style while keeping the simple brick-breaking idea at the center.
