Hard difficulty turned into a craze causing fans to spend hours chasing high scores. Nguyen faced huge attention and rising stress. He removed the game from online shops in February 2014.

Fans paid steep sums for old devices loaded with Flappy Bird. Copycats sprang up everywhere to mimic the bird and its pipes. The concept still appears online and it inspired fresh indie projects.
